Safety While Canvassing
Your safety is the top priority — always. Canvassing is generally very safe, but it's smart to be prepared. Here's how to look out for yourself and your partner.
The Buddy System
Most canvasses pair you with a partner. This is great for safety and for learning. Here's how it works:
• You and your partner walk the same block together
• One person takes the odd-numbered houses, the other takes even
• You stay within sight of each other
• If either of you feels uncomfortable, you both leave the area
If you're canvassing solo, let the organizer know your route and check in by text every 30 minutes.
The buddy system keeps you and your partner within sight of each other
Situational Awareness
Pay attention to your surroundings. A few common-sense tips:
• Stay on public paths — sidewalks, driveways, front porches. Don't go around to back doors or through fences.
• Watch for dogs — if a yard has a dog that seems aggressive, skip that house.
• Trust your gut — if something feels off, it probably is. Move on to the next house.
• Keep your phone charged — you need it for the walk list and for emergencies.
• Know where you are — be aware of street names so you can describe your location if needed.
When to Walk Away
Leave immediately if:
• Someone threatens you verbally or physically
• Someone is visibly intoxicated or unstable
• A dog is aggressive and not contained
• You feel unsafe for any reason at all
You don't need to justify it. "I don't feel comfortable" is a complete reason. Just walk away calmly, and let your organizer know what happened.
Important
Never enter someone's home, even if invited. All conversations happen at the door or on the porch. If someone insists you come inside, politely decline and move on.
What to Carry
• Your phone (charged and with signal)
• Water
• Campaign materials and ID (some areas require you to identify yourself)
• Sunscreen and a hat on sunny days
• Comfortable, visible clothing — no dark hoodies
Reporting Incidents
If something concerning happens during a canvass:
• Get to a safe location first
• Call or text your organizer immediately
• If it's an emergency, call 911
• Log the incident in the app using the Report Issue option on the shift page
Use the Report Issue button to log any safety concerns
