Conversation Tips

The best canvassers aren't the ones who talk the most — they're the ones who listen. Here are practical tips for having great conversations at the door.

Opening the Conversation

First impressions happen fast. Here's a reliable opening:

• Smile and introduce yourself — "Hi, I'm [name], and I'm a volunteer with [campaign]."

• State your purpose — "I'm out here today talking to neighbors about [issue/candidate]."

• Ask a question — "Have you had a chance to think about the upcoming election?"

That's it. Keep it simple, friendly, and conversational.

Listening More Than Talking

The goal isn't to deliver a speech. The goal is to have a conversation. Some tips:

• Ask open-ended questions — "What issues matter most to you?" works better than "Do you support our candidate?"

• Let them talk — people want to feel heard, especially about political stuff

• Acknowledge their concerns — even if you disagree, say "I hear you" or "That makes sense"

• Share your own story — "The reason I volunteer for this is..." connects on a personal level

Handling Objections

Not everyone will agree with you, and that's okay. Here's how to handle common pushback:

• "I'm not interested" — "No problem at all. Thanks for your time!" Move on cheerfully.

• "I'm voting the other way" — "I appreciate you sharing that. Is there anything specific that's driving your decision?" Sometimes a real conversation opens up.

• "I don't vote" — "I totally get that. Is there an issue that would make it worth it for you?" Many non-voters just haven't found a reason yet.

• "I'm busy right now" — "Totally understand. Can I leave this info with you?" Hand them a flyer and move on.

The 60-Second Rule

If someone isn't interested, spend no more than 60 seconds trying. A graceful exit leaves the door open for future contact. Being pushy closes it permanently.

Being Respectful

• Never argue — you're there to listen and share, not debate

• Respect "no" immediately — walk away with a smile

• Don't enter anyone's home — stay at the door or on the sidewalk

• Leave the area cleaner than you found it

• Thank everyone for their time, regardless of their response

After each conversation, record the response quickly and move on
