Phone Banking Best Practices

You've made a few calls and you're getting the hang of it. Here are tips from experienced phone bankers to help you level up.

Tone and Energy

• Smile while you talk — it sounds silly, but people can hear a smile. Your tone changes when your face is relaxed and friendly.

• Stand up — standing gives you more energy and projects better over the phone.

• Speak at a natural pace — not too fast (nervous energy) and not too slow (sounds bored).

• Be warm, not salesy — you're a neighbor, not a telemarketer. Chat, don't pitch.

Pacing Your Session

• Take breaks — after every 15-20 calls, take a 5-minute breather. Get water, stretch, reset.

• Set a goal — "I'll make 50 calls this shift" gives you something to aim for.

• Don't dwell — if a call goes badly, shake it off. The next person is a fresh start.

• Track your progress — the app shows your call count and connect rate. Watching the numbers go up is motivating.

Making Meaningful Connections

• Use their name — "That's a great point, Maria" feels personal and respectful.

• Listen for cues — if they mention a specific concern, acknowledge it. "I hear you on healthcare costs. That's actually one of the main reasons I volunteer for this campaign."

• Be honest — if you don't know the answer to a question, say so. "That's a great question. I'm not sure, but I can find out and have someone get back to you."

• Thank everyone — whether they're a strong supporter or hung up on you, end with gratitude.

The Power of Follow-Up

If someone asks a question you can't answer, note it in the app. The campaign team can follow up with the right information. This turns a "maybe" into a "yes" surprisingly often.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

• Reading the script robotically — use it as a guide, not a teleprompter

• Arguing with voters — you'll never win an argument on the phone. Thank them and move on.

• Spending too long on one call — 3-5 minutes is ideal. If it goes past 7, wrap up politely.

• Getting discouraged by no-answers — reaching 30% of people is actually a good rate.
